Part 3: You Must Believe It To Achieve It

You’ve started with dreams, moved to a plan and set your goals. But do you believe it can happen? Most of us have a built-in naysayer, a voice inside us that convinces us that those big dreams can never happen. You might even have a few of them with names like: Fear of failure, You’re not enough, It’s impossible, or Indecision. They are determined to keep us within our comfort zone and stuck in status quo. Any time we get a great idea, that voice creeps in and pops our bubble of confidence.

What are you willing and ready to do in order to make your dreams come true? That’s a big question and takes some personal reflection to find the answers. Will you take a job you don’t like, make sacrifices to go to grad school, drive a not-so-cool car till you can honestly afford a nicer one, or live on a budget and forgo all the extras you want right now? Achieving a successful and fulfilling life is hard work and worth all the effort. It takes sacrifices, determination and commitment, as well as willingness to make mistakes and face your fears head on.

Life is full of choices. How you will spend your time and money, where you will live, who you will spend your time with (or date or marry), what career path you’ll take. These are just a few of the choices that “20-somethings” face every day. It’s not really a “life crisis”, it’s more like a transition from living a life dependent on your parents and teachers and even your peers, to a life where you are responsible for everything. That means there is no one else to blame for your failure or to thank for your success but yourself.

Suicide: A Parenting Dilemma

In light of the most recent suicide on Cornell University’s campus, on March 11, 2010, the college has acquired the derogatory moniker as a “Suicide School”. Facing pressure from parents and the media to identify the source of the problem and the university’s responsibility to “fix it”, professionals and college administrators have weighed in on this issue. While most people would agree that the university has taken significant steps to address the problem including suspending privacy of college students in favor of contacting parents about grades and mental health issues, many question whether this is a problem unique to the Cornells, Harvards and MITs of the world or indicative of a growing trend amongst our young adults.

Have you had that talk with your kids yet? You know the one where you sit them down and explain that the world doesn’t revolve around them. The message that everything they want will not magically appear in front of them when they want it….No? Well what are you waiting for?

It’s just about that time of year again.

For the new college student heading off to college for the first time, or the returning Sophomore, Junior, or Senior, you know getting your finances in order is sometimes harder than the courses you’ll be taking.

The Competition for College: Out of Control

A growing number of parents of elementary age children are seeking information and suggestions on how to help their child prepare for college. Anecdotes abound about parents who race to enroll their kids on waiting lists for prestigious private schools months after the child’s birth. Parents compare the most effective strategies for giving their child an advantage and some have gone so far as to hold their child back from entering kindergarten to ensure this. They explain that a more mentally and physically developed child can have an advantage not only in the classroom, but also in athletic competition. The under riding drive to ensure that one’s child stands out seems to be fueled by parents’ anxiety about the growing competition for college admissions and scholarships and a fear that their children will be left out or in some way be disadvantaged by programs that they believe favor other kids. And as their fears heighten, the steps parents will take to ensure their child’s place grows out of control.

Three years ago, the University of Florida asked for a big tuition increase, saying it would help it become a world class institution. There would be more faculty and more advisors. UF would be ranked as one of the top 10 public schools in the country.
