Three years ago, the University of Florida asked for a big tuition increase, saying it would help it become a world class institution. There would be more faculty and more advisors. UF would be ranked as one of the top 10 public schools in the country.
But, that was before the recession hit and UF had to make more than $100 million in cuts. Now, as this St. Petersburg Times story explains, 15 percent tuition increases at UF and the other 10 schools will be used more to soften budget cuts than to enhance academic programs.
I also wrote about how budget cuts were affecting universities in a weekend story.
The Board of Governors is meeting today to approve the tuition increases.
